Does Iron Deficiency Cause Mouth Ulcer? Reply with quote
Mouth ulcers are painful, tender vividly defined round sores that crop up on the insides of our mouth. Mouth ulcers are a common condition and can take place due to a number of reasons like biting on the inside of the cheek, smoking and oral trauma like excessive brushing. They can occur under the lips, on the inside of the cheeks or on the underside of the tongue. Mouth ulcers are not contagious, and cannot be passed from one person to another. But recurrent mouth ulcers are a more serious matter. Iron deficiency is a major cause of mouth ulcer. Let us look at the ways in which iron deficiency causes mouth ulcer. Diet Iron deficiency causes mouth ulcers when there are inadequate stores of iron in the food. When there is a deficiency of iron in the food, the red blood cells will not be able to carry oxygen throughout the body. This will result in you feeling fatigued, lethargic and nauseous. Another symptom of iron deficiency due to an inadequate diet in the body is the occurrence of mouth ulcers.

Menstruation There are certain body conditions which will cause iron deficiency in an otherwise healthy individual, resulting in the occurrence of mouth ulcers. When a woman loses blood due to her monthly menstruation cycle, this depletes the iron stores in the body. This results in iron deficiency, which causes mouth ulcers. As menstruation is a monthly bodily function, mouth ulcers also become frequent. Bleeding A person can lose blood due to cutting or scraping various parts of their body by accident. Even a person who is healthy and conscious of his diet can lose blood in this manner. This blood loss causes iron deficiency which results in mouth ulcer. Prescription Drugs The doctor prescribes certain drugs which throw the body off its balance. These drugs will sometimes affect the hormones and bodily functions in a negative way. Certain prescription drugs halt the absorption of dietary iron. The regular consumption of these prescription drugs will lead to iron deficiency which causes mouth ulcers. Anaemia When there is a reduction in the number of red blood cells or haemoglobin in the body, a condition called anemia will result. This is the extreme form of iron deficiency where the patient might experience worsened symptoms of iron deficiency. This form of iron deficiency will result in recurrent, painful mouth ulcers. A dietary change with extra intake of iron rich food like dark green leafy vegetables, meat, seafood and whole grains will increase the supply of iron in the body. Also make sure to get iron supplements which are to be taken during the menstruation period or when you lose blood. These measures will prevent iron deficiency related mouth ulcers.
